Sometimes I wonder if the general shift from background music to background videos has caused immeasurable harm to humanity at large.

I spend a lot of my time reading and every time I try to leave a video or a show on in the background my brain gets overloaded by trying to parse two streams of words at once and stops working.
How do these people do it? Do they all just have ADHD or something? And if they do, is this kind of constant overstimulation the cause or a symptom?

Why is it a bad thing to have a video on in the background?

It feels like videos are much more attention captivating than music. As such trying to use them as "background" is a fairly contradictory task. Since one or the other will command your full attention to comprehend, and if you don't think so and believe you can forget what you're watching easily then you're most likely wrong. In that case you're taking nothing in from either activity you're doing. Most of the stuff you remember from "background videos" is from them taking up more of your attention than the primary task you were doing. Although if what you're doing is nothing and menial then it's probably not that big of a deal since you just wanted to watch the video and that's why you're doing a menial task. Otherwise music doesn't engage your brain to think too critically about it or follow along to a thought thread like a video would often have you do.

Of course that's mostly speculation on my part since I haven't really read any studies for how the brain engages music vs videos, but it's certainly how it feels.

hope you're using flac for your files otherwise switching to background music is pointless and you may as well go back melting your brain with videos

I switched over to flac because I have lost way too many audio files to mp3 degradation over the years.

I'll put videos on the side when doing something like refining a drawing or initial color stages because I've already done the mental work and problem solving. Another time it's good is grinding in something like an rpg. Even music can be too stimulating sometimes. It is background though because I couldn't tell you what's being said or what it was about, it's just noise for the sake of it.

I'm like this and not sure how to fix it. It's borderline impossible for me to complete any task without hearing some sort of noise in the background.
