When are we moving back to critical anime rather than poorly formed escapism which serves only to induce feelings of complacency and capitulation? I think I'm starting to feel really fed up with isekai.

And also shit like >>89713 doesn't count because it sucks and doesn't say anything or have a voice of its own.

Himitsu no Aipri explores the dark nature of humanity as young girls struggle to achieve their dreams in a harsh environment where only the strong survive to become star Aipri. It's a close look at what it means to pursuit your goals among others who may not survive to meet you at the finishing line.

What do you mean I love those. But for every one of those there's at least a dozen isekai slopfests that wastes my time at the start of each season and I hate it.

If the average isekai was any good at doing something meaningful with the concept and it's worldbuilding then it wouldn't be so insipid. There's only so much self insert escapism schlock I can tolerate before I stop trying and just use AI to fill that desire myself. There's some good out there, but it's like searching for diamonds in a pile of shit.

And no I canNOT just stop watching them I have to give everything a fair chance before dropping it into the ninth circle of hell to face Lucifer directly.

I'd rather move back to well formed escapism. What kind of retard wants their escapism to be in a generic JRPG setting with elves and dragons and other boring shit instead of in a bath full of preteen girls and one 16 year old alcoholic?

I don't know why more people don't talk about Kusuriya here. It's one of my favorites of the past year. Despite having the more stereotypical genius MC in part with Maomao, she's not really that impressive in her setting because everyone else is also fairly competent as well. She also has her own shortcomings that cause her to fail more when it comes to interpersonal relations and sorting through more messy issues unless her hand is forced.

It says a lot about a more imperialistic society while not just simply bashing it for existing. The current emperor probably being a more proper fit for his people than the past pedo emperor who was a cowardly loser to the end who seemed to usher in skepticism for the heavenly mandate. Which is probably what allows for government officials/nobles to take aim at Jinshi instead of being in total fear of the Emperor's power.

A shame that palace politics seems to be such a turnoff for a few people.

More like pennies. Sure those few have value, but it's so little it's not worth the effort to look for them.

Because it's in the stream and because it requires people to pay attention to more than funny faces.

Kusuriya is a work of feminist fiction done in a way that's very palatable for ordinary people.
I like it, but those topics don't make me want to discuss them, much less with Kissu who isn't very feminist either.

Guess I sorta feel the same way since I left out those parts of it intentionally because I felt it'd cause a disruptive discussion.

When is the world going to stop being incredibly kuso and not want people to kill themselves to escape this reality and hopefully find somewhere better in the grand-mulitversal soul exchange?

Escapist anime forces the viewer to engage in critical thinking just as much. Why would we need to escape reality if life was good?

i'm with you i think. been steering away from the isekaislop because it's all the same it seems. i'm not against the escapism but they could at least make it good.

Ah, that explains why I cant't even go near the series while normalfags eat it up like candy.

The anime industry is first and foremost an industry - generic power fantasy isekai offers safe returns, and will keep being made until it doesn't. The home-video market when Gunslinger Girl was made allowed for diversified bets geared toward more mature consumers with money to spend, VHS/DVD/Blu-ray sales were a focus alongside cross-medium formats. Now that streaming's king total views across the global market and hooking gacha whales have become more important - both of which incentivize as wide an appeal as possible.

There are always exceptions and it's possible to make good anime within these constraints, but isekai's not going away any time soon. On a brighter note I do think falling production costs, competition among streaming services and production companies to differentiate themselves, and easier access to different revenue streams will allow for a new renaissance of more 'niche' anime in the near future, which arguably has already started.

Anime about depressed girls doesn't appeal to me, a depressed man. I mostly agree that isekai has overstayed its welcome and new anime in that genre fails to capture my interest beyond a novel premise or a cute character design.
I'm looking forward to the new Ghost in the Shell from SARU... It looks very nice judging by its concept art.

I try to focus on the positives and if there will be only 30 good anime in the remaining 2020s, it will mean that 95% of good anime are already out there, and I don't mean serious classics with tragic heroes asking philosophical questions and whatsoever. A 2025 anime fan has less interest in 2015 shows than a 2015 fan in 2005 shows so it's up to people with a lot of time to find gems that nobody outside of obscure imageboards gives a shit about. I don't blame the current audiences for not knowing any better; the exotic, esoteric gems were never meant to be exported outside of the island state.
